A holiday to Naples is a great choice if you want to see the
real Italy, without the highly developed tourist infrastructure of
many of the other cities in the country. A fun place full of life
with plenty of things to do, the most common reason to visit Naples
is to see the nearby Roman ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Some
are the most impressive Roman ruins in the world; these places are
stuck in a time warp, incredibly well preserved after being buried
by the ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius many centuries ago.
The best time to go to Naples is during spring or autumn, as the
middle of the summer is extremely hot and certainly not ideal for
sightseeing. The winter is not a bad choice either, as it can still
be fairly mild and quite sunny. Also, in the winter, you don’t have
to worry about reserving any accommodation, and there will not be
many tourists either.
Naples also serves as a good base to explore Southern Italy, not to
mention the expeditions to Vesuvius which looms up over the city,
and is popular for hiking and climbing. However, the city itself has
plenty of its own attractions as well, which should not be missed.
Naples has an abundance of cultural and historical attractions which
are sure to keep you occupied for a few days.
The third largest city in Italy, Naples may come across as rather
chaotic as its streets are busy and there is certainly plenty of
activity going on at all times. Also famous for being the birthplace
of the pizza, its restaurants are world famous, and there is plenty
to choose from. For those interested in enjoying some of the best
cuisine in Europe, Naples will undoubtedly impress.
The surrounding nature is also highly attractive, with the
impressive slopes of Mount Vesuvius behind the city, and the
sheltered Bay of Naples in front of it. A rather unusual mix of
spectacular baroque and renaissance churches and impressive museums
amongst rather squalid high-rises, Naples is one of those places
that you need to have a little patience to explore. The city has
more than its share of hidden gems, and many of them may take a bit
of exploring to unearth.
Naples is the ideal base to explore the Amalfi Coast as well as the
Roman ruins. Other sites in the city itself that you should visit
include the Museum of Archaeology, which perfectly complements the
nearby ruins. The Naples Aquarium is also a great place for a family
day out, being the oldest in Europe and home to over 200 species of
fascinating marine life.
There are also plenty of shopping opportunities in Naples, and being
the third largest city in Italy, you can find many fashionable
shops, street markets and quaint little boutiques. There is
something for everyone, and there are also plenty of bargains to be
found without having to look too hard for them. |
